Benefits of Virtus, the new Male Living and Learning Engineering Program

Dr. Paige Smith, who is the director of the Women in engineering program at the A. James Clark School of Engineering, talked about Virtus, the new program that has been introduced this year and is an extension of the women in engineering program (FLEXUS). Virtus, meaning manly character,
is for first year male engineering students for the purpose of retaining students in the Clark School of Engineering. This is done through the sense of community the students will achieve by taking classes together and living in the same dormitory floors or same building. This is beneficial to this program since students can study together and have an academic bond as well as a social bond. Another benefit of Virtus is having a student assistance center in their building where they can receive free tutoring for the classes they are taking their freshmen year. Through this program students will also be introduced to mentors and offered professional opportunities. This is a great living and learning program which will boost male engineering students’ confidence in their pursuit for engineering.
