Criminology Expert Explains How Technology Effects Homicide Rates

The Main Factors that Effect Crime.

Deterrence of crime is caused by three things: 1) the severity of the punishment someone receives for committing the crime 2) the swiftness of how long it takes for the criminal to be placed on trial and prosecuted and 3) the certainty in which the criminal will be found guilty for his crime. Certainty is the leading cause for deterring people from crime.



Certainty, However, is Not Always Successful at Deterrence of Crime.


DNA technology, with its ability to determine the murderer without a doubt, is often used for homicide cases. Therefore, it would make sense that it would effect the homicide rate. A criminology TA at the University of Maryland, Daren Fisher shares his thoughts on DNA technology and how it effects homicide rates.






Technology That Effects the Homicide Rate.


So if DNA technology with its high certainty rate does not effect the homicide rate, does anything nowadays play a role in the deterrence or even stimulation of it? Mr. Fisher provides an example of technology used today that actually has a negative role and increases the homicide rate.




Gun Enhancements Provide Easier Way to Effect the Homicide Rate.


There are plenty of different guns made nowadays with many different purposes. With their deadly nature, guns would be a prime candidate of technology that increases the homicide rate; however, is there something specific about them that effects it? Daren explains how new gun technology largely impacts homicide rates.




Consequently, it appears as if modern technology provides greater opportunities to raise the homicide rate (as in guns), rather then lower it (DNA technology). The greatest way to decrease the homicide rate is not to utilize technology, but rather to use legislation to control the newer and ever advancing technology that we have in today's society. As in all technology, it can be beneficial or detrimental, and as owners of these newfound advancements, we must learn to use them responsibly.
