How Effective LinkedIn is According to a Business Professional

What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a website that creates a social network (currently the third most popular social network) for employers in the business world to find employees.  LinkedIn allows people to put their resumes online for employers to look at them and what they have accomplished.  So online resume and career searching is basically the main point of LinkedIn.  This is the new breakthrough in career searching technology right?  Below is an interview with Dr. Waverly Ding, assistant professor of business management and organization at University of Maryland, in which she discusses LinkedIn and how effective it is in certain fields.
How does a professional see LinkedIn in assessing employees?
When asked if websites such as LinkedIn are successful in assessing potential employees Ding states to specific points about the size and specifics of the people on LinkedIn.

Ding claims that because you are only accessing a select pool of people, LinkedIn is not that effective.  Remember that only people with LinkedIn accounts are seen on LinkedIn (obviously) so therefore if a firm was to look only to LinkedIn, they would miss out on all of the possible employees that are not on it.  This could lead to a missed opportunity with a brilliant employee.
LinkedIn is definitely successful in helping people to find jobs
In Ding’s response to the question of how effective LinkedIn is in the field of finding potential employees she is very supportive.  Ding believes that LinkedIn is very effective as are other technological tools for finding employees.
Ding states that there is a lot of research proving the effectiveness of being found on LinkedIn and how it has made it easier to find employees and jobs.  In fact, researchers at Carnegie Mellon have proved in a study that having accounts on social networks exponentially increases your chances of finding a job.  Ding also states that LinkedIn makes it easier to find jobs and workers by using references.  LinkedIn allows users to look at recommendations from former firms which can help to promote you to another firm while job searching.
What should LinkedIn change for better performance?
When Ding was asked about what LinkedIn could improve on she states that there is not too much to improve but more to keep consistent.

Ding speaks about how LinkedIn has made better steps with its privacy settings than Facebook.  Both Facebook and LinkedIn are huge social networks and Ding says that in order for LinkedIn to keep competing, it must hold its privacy standards high.
What have we learned?
Overall, LinkedIn is a massive business based social network that helps allow employees and employers find jobs and workers.  It has a much stronger business tie than Facebook and allows people to put up resumes for firms to look at easier.  One of its weaknesses is that it decreases from the drawing pool by limiting firms to looking only at people on LinkedIn yet its strong point is that the privacy settings are, as of right now, trumping Facebook’s settings.
