Faster Streaming Videos to Come with MPEG-H

(Source)
MPEG-H Part 2, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and H.265, is a new video compression format created by a partnership of Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG). Although it has the same video quality as H.264 (aka MPEG-4 or AVC), it will only be half as large, meaning half the current bandwidth is used. This is especially great for mobile networks users since watching video content is normally expensive. Besides being more compact, the video frames can be divided into separate tiles so that multicore processors can essentially multitask. On the down side, this does take more up processing power.

With this new compression, the 1080p standard could be raised with the possibility to support HDTV and UHDTV (ultra-high definition TV) streaming.

As of August 13th, HEVC is expected to be released as early as January 2013 and will definitely be implemented in smartphones and tablets by the end of 2013.
