How Technology Can Spark A Revolution

As a generation defined by the rapid development of social media, we publish our lives on sites such as Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch, share our opinions, and in the case of the Egyptians, spark a revolution. On June 8, 2010, Wael Ghonim created the Facebook page “Kullena Khaled Said” (“We Are All Khaled Said”) after coming across an image of Said’s body, having been killed by Egyptian police. Within three months his page had 250,000 members, and these members came together in a revolution that made headlines. The movement culminated in the rally at Tahrir Square, leading to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak and the disbanding of the NDP. Ghonim’s story shows just how powerful technology can be in spreading news quickly and how it can give a great deal of power to ordinary people.
