From the Mailbox to the Inbox: Is Email Leading to the Post Office's Demise?

Much to the letdown of dogs everywhere, digital media has caused a substantial thinning of the postal worker population worldwide. As society progresses technologically, the traditional envelope-in-mailbox form of communication has fallen to the more modern distribution channel of email. With this shift in effect, the postal service is suffering severely financially. In fact, in 2011 the postal service came frighteningly close to shutting their doors for the winter due to their inability to pay the $5.5 billion dollars they owed. Their fiscal instability lead to several cutbacks, including a multitude of mail carriers losing their jobs. According to this article, hardly necessary are the postmen of yesteryear when current digital media allows for messages to be exchanged much quicker. The rising number of unemployed mail carriers and the accumulating postal service debt begs the question: Do the benefits of digital media outweigh the costs?
