QR Codes Are The Newest Ways to Get Info

A QR Code, short for Quick Response code, is very similar to your average barcode in the sense that they both use scanning technology. However, QR Codes are 2D, can store much more data, and almost anyone can make one. They are processed as a digital image by an image sensor (camera phone) and then analyzed by a programmed processor (a phone app). Amazingly, you do not even need the complete square in order for it to work. If the bottom corner is torn, the scanner can still decode it.

The QR code even works if you use your phone
to take a picture of this image on your laptop!

This technology was first used in Japan of 1994 by trucking companies to track shipments. Since then, QR Codes have popped up around the world in stores, magazines, and on street corners in the form of links to websites, map directions, advertisements, and virtual shopping.

QR Codes are becoming more and more popular as people trade in their flip phones for smart phones. In a fast pace society, these codes are great. All you have to do is download a QR Code app (There are many for Android and iPhone) and take a quick picture. With that, you will have all the info you need! No more scurrying around for paper and pencil to jot down the name of something.

Recently, Macquarie University (in Australia) implemented QR codes into their bookstore. Students are able to scan the code and then buy the textbook using PayPal. This definitely beats waiting in line and having to carry the heavy books back to the dorms.  Another example is in London, where grocery shoppers can use an app called Scan 'n' Go to scan their food items and then pay using the self-checkout lines.

Obviously, QR codes are geared towards the mobile audience. The whole point of them is to provide more details than a small advertisement and at the convince of the person. Those who are interested simply have to take out their phone and save the picture. Those who aren't can just go on with their day without being bombarded by useless ads.  Companies can use QR codes as a way to market their product and allow certain people special offers like getting and redeeming coupons. In marketing, they can also track who uses the code and use that feedback.
