Video Game Escapism

At the heart of most addictions is a desire to escape the dangerously monotonous routines of an ordinary life. Now, it seems that many of today's youth are turning to the video games as their getaway vehicle of choice. According to a recent study, as much as 8.5% of America's youth suffer from a video game addiction. The study based their diagnosis on the same criteria that is used to diagnose substance addictions, such as narcotics. (Washington Post.)

The possibility of video game addictions has even led to the opening of an addiction treatment center in Amsterdam that specializes in video games. Here, patients are put through a "detoxing" process, in an attempt to rid them of what specialists see as a very real problem. (Webmd.com)

When one considers the psychological allure of video games, it is not hard to see why it is becoming such a popular addiction. Video games create a fantasy world that gamers can escape to, where they can take on powers they might lack in real life.
